DescriptionIzembek National Wildlife Refuge busiest season runs between May through September with monthly arrivals on the Alaska Maritime Highway ferry system. Our refuge offers guided refuge tours to those visiting and passing through on their travels. For this project you would be assisting with tours whether it be presenting the scripted tour, driving the tour bus, or assisting with visitor services. The Cold Bay Silver Salmon Derby starts and ends on Labor Day weekend and is exclusively for Russel Creek, which happens to be the biggest of the three fishable creeks that run within thirty minutes of the town. Izembek Refuge staff assist in weighing the catch throughout the weekend. For this project you would be assisting Izembek NWR with visitor services in weighing catches and greeting visitors.
Skills NeededFWS Defensive driving (optional, but will allow volunteers to drive FWS vehicles). Volunteers must be comfortable with Public Speaking, Vehicle operation, handling fish. Accommodations will be in refuge housing and will require sharing spaces with other volunteers and employees.
Materials NeededIzembek Refuge will provide Housing, Equipment, airfare, grocery stipend.
