Selawik Refuge: Spring Birding Tours

Project NameSpring Birding Tours
Project Number448
LocationKotzebue
DatesMay 16-18
Duration3 days
Number of Volunteers Needed1
DescriptionSelawik NWR needs a volunteer to help lead community bird watching tours on May 16-18. The birding tours would consist of 2-4 separate events, TBD, of about 2 hours each. We meet at NPS visitor center here in Kotzebue and load the community members into gov\'t vehicles. We go around the loop road, stopping at pre-selected locations to get out and look for birds. We set up scopes and also provide snacks and drinks. Generally folks are novice to intermediate birders, and our staff recognize many of the birds, but having a more skilled birder on hand gives us a sense of reassurance. Also community members are interested in meeting the different volunteers who come. Travel to and from Kotzebue is not provided. However, a roundtrip ticket from Kotzebue to Anchorage can cost as little as 10,000 Alaska Airlines miles. The Refuge will provide housing, making this a great opportunity for a birding enthusiast to see birds near the peak of migration in Kotzebue.
Skills NeededMust be able to identify Northwest Alaska birds by sight.
Audience AgeAdult
Materials NeededPlease provide your own binoculars. You will need clothing and footwear suitable for damp, windy, and chilly spring weather in Kotzebue.
