Descriptionzembek National Wildlife Refuge lies between the highly productive waters of the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska. The heart of the refuge is Izembek Lagoon, a coastal ecosystem that\'s home to one of the world\'s largest eelgrass beds. Hundreds of thousands of waterfowl, including virtually the entire population of Pacific black brant, visit the lagoon to feed on eelgrass and rest during migration.   For this project, you will be assisting Izembek NWR conduct brant surveys throughout Izembek Lagoon. This will require boating and hiking in rough terrain and rough weather to estimate annual productivity of brant during the peak migratory period. The refuge will supply housing in their bunkhouse, a food stipend, and occasional use of refuge vehicle (if volunteer is willing to first complete the required defensive driving course). However, the Volunteer is responsible for their travel to and from Cold Bay. Skills NeededWaterfowl survey experience is desirable, but not required. Must be comfortable in a small boat and hiking over wet, uneven terrain in dense brown bear habitat. Must be tolerable of days of bad weather, potentially including wind, rain, snow and cold. Accommodations will be in refuge housing and will require sharing spaces with other volunteers and employees.
