DescriptionIzembek National Wildlife Refuge lies between the highly productive waters of the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska. The heart of the refuge is Izembek Lagoon, a coastal ecosystem that\'s home to one of the world\'s largest eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds. Hundreds of thousands of waterfowl, including virtually the entire population of Pacific black brant, visit the lagoon to feed on eelgrass and rest during migration. From brown bears to 5 species of Pacific salmon, more than 200 species call this refuge home. Topography stretches from sea level to rugged volcanic mountains exceeding 9,000 feet, with coastal marshes and berry-producing, low-growing bush tundra interspersed with numerous lakes, ponds and alder brush-lined streams. You would be conducting waterfowl surveys as part of a team by hiking and boating around the world famous Izembek Lagoon in weather that can be snotty. But the birds will be great. You would be in the field every day with prep time and cleanup time at the end of the day. Boating would be in a small boat and Boat-MOCC is desirable but not required. Hiking would be over uneven and wet ground. The refuge would supply housing in their bunkhouse, food and occasional use of a refuge vehicle. You would need to get yourself to Cold Bay. Tickets are expensive ($1600) but it may be possible to use mileage and Friends is going to attempt to get donated miles. Please discuss this with us. Call Leticia Melendez at the refuge for logistical details 907 532-2445 and Alison Willliams, refuge biologist for details about the work 907 532-2445. You must be a Friends member and must submit a Volunteer Application.
Skills NeededWaterfowl survey experience is desirable but not required. Boat MOCC training is desirable but not required. Must be comfortable in a small boat and hiking over wet, uneven terrain. Must be OK with days of bad weather including wind, rain and cold. This is a position for a fit person. You need to be flexible and comfortable sharing bunkhouse accommodations. FWS defensive driving course will probably be required but can be taken on line. If you already have it, include that information in your application. If you already have boat MOCC training also include that.
