The Watershed Education Project (WEP) is an exploratory, hands-on learning opportunity for fourth grade students in the Anchorage School District. The goal is to teach the interconnectedness between the Chester Creek watershed and the salmon that live out key parts of their lifecycle in many local Alaskan’s backyards and nearby school grounds. Eight schools and 12 classrooms are participating. The Watershed Education Project is a joint effort by Fish & Wildlife Service, BLM, Park Service and others powered by volunteers. WEP has three main components and volunteers can choose what portion they want to work on. The lessons have been prepared and you will be furnished with all materials to lead the session.
  • a classroom learning portion with an interactive salmon game,
  • a stream visit near a school with hands-on field studies, and
  • A Westchester Lagoon field trip (dependent on bus availability).
