Duration2 days
Number of Volunteers Needed2 - 3 FILLED
DescriptionHelp the refuge with their first Arctic Wild and Scenic Rivers Days at Coldfoot Visitor Center while spreading the word about Friends and recruiting new members. Tasks include talking to the public, explaining about Refuges, Wild and Scenic Rivers, and Friends, helping set up for the event including food prep, and possibly leading or assisting in leading a hike to the nearby Koyukuk River. Fall colors, fun staff, and hikes, a trip to Wiseman and potentially a packraft river trip add to the fun. Visitors this time of year are primarily sheep hunters. Visitation can come in waves with long dry spells so the volunteers need to be flexible and able to entertain themselves. The Refuge has two dry cabins sleeping 2 per room available from August 19 to the 22. A shower house is nearby. Friends will pay gas expenses for one personal vehicle from Fairbanks and return. Coldfoot is about 250 miles and 8 hours of driving north of Fairbanks up the mostly paved Dalton Highway. Volunteers will be responsible for their own food.
Skills NeededAbility to speak with the public and represent Refuges and Friends in a diplomatic and positive manner. Ability to work with Refuge staff and interagency partners and flexibility as visitor center use varies dramatically so programs may not pull off as planned. Knowledge of Friends, Refuges and the Wild and Scenic Rivers of the Arctic are a plus. Please address in your application any experience working with the public and your knowledge of Refuges, the Wild and Scenic Rivers and Friends. If you don\'t know about Wild and Scenic Rivers are you willing to study up before this event?
