Project Number395
LocationTok
DatesMarch 13-18, 2022
Duration6 days
Number of Volunteers Needed1 FILLED
DescriptionTwo Friends volunteers will snowmachine with Tetlin Refuge\'s Lead Park Ranger Tim Lorenzini to a remote refuge cabin on a lake where they will spend 3 nights cutting, hauling and stacking a two year\'s supply of firewood. And there will be ice fishing. Lots of ice fishing. The cabin which is only accessible by float plane or snowmachine, dog sleds or skiis is used for biological projects and by the public. The refuge will supply the snowmachines and all gear, snowmachine training and certification and food on the trip. You pay your way to Tok. \'The entire trip is 6 days from March 13 to the 18. Arrive in Tok on Sunday the 13th and stay in refuge bunkhouse. Monday is snowmachine training and certification, loading machines and supplies and purchasing food. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights you stay at the cabin. Friday return to Tok and either head home or stay that night in the refuge bunkhouse. The Tetlin Refuge is true wilderness and Tim is one of the funnest guys in the refuges. Experience new country, some hard work, fun and ice fishing.
Skills NeededQualifications are some snowmachine experience, winter hardy (Tok temperatures can be extreme even in March), backcountry savvy as this will be remote, ability to do hard work and lift heavy pieces of firewood, ability to get along with new people on a shared project and in a small cabin, and good winter clothing and sleeping gear (you furnish your own although the refuge undoubtedly has snowmachine helmets). Address these points in your application. Selections will be made by February 15 or earlier.
