DatesApril 30-May 1, 2021
Duration2 days
Number of Volunteers NeededNo limit
DescriptionAn annual roadside and recreation area community trash clean up, the Green Up Refuge Clean Up, is looking for community volunteers to help remove the blowing litter that accumulates on refuge roadsides, trails and in campgrounds over the winter when it melts out of the snow in early spring, and before the leaves appear on vegetation, hiding it again. The Clean Up will be a hybrid experience this year, with no in person gathering before or after the event. It has been extended over 2 days, as well, to spread supplies among smaller groups. Six locations have been chosen for easy access, close to town, where groups or families can participate in an outdoor, socially-distanced community service activity.
Skills NeededPre-event Coordination (1-2): this volunteer or pair of volunteers will work with clean up organizer (Leah) to secure event supplies, help call community groups to check on interest and/or sign up participating group teams, and design/print sign up sheets and site reporting forms using past year files as a guide. Event Day Staging (1-2): this volunteer or pair of volunteers will help refuge staff arrange supply kits and be on hand at scheduled pick up times at the Refuge Visitor Center to hand out supply sets to participant teams, explain the reporting form, and confirm expected return time of each team. This volunteer(s) is needed on both Friday, 4/30 and Saturday 5/1. Event Day Trash Bag pick up (1): this volunteer will work with refuge staff to pick up filled bags from specific clean up sites, count bags at each site, complete a reporting form that will help inform organizers of data for prize winners, and deliver all trash and recycling to the Soldotna Dump or Funny River Transfer Station. Use of Refuge vehicle will be possible with additional forms. This volunteer(s) is needed on both Friday, 4/30 and Saturday 5/1. Event Day Clean Up Site Host (2-3): This volunteer hosts a specific clean up site, welcomes members of the public who are signed up for that location, is responsible for hosting at a specific time as confirmed by event organizer, and will pick up supplies and return them to the Refuge Visitor Center. Event Day Clean Up Participant: This volunteer joins other Friends members to clean up the Ski Hill Multi-use Trail and Ski Hill Road. Date and Time TBD. No limit on volunteer numbers for this opportunity.
