Tetlin NWR Refuge: Cabin Clean Out/4th of July

Project NameCabin Clean Out/4th of July
Project Number386
LocationTok
DatesLate June-July 2020
DurationTBD
Number of Volunteers Needed1 or 2
DescriptionTwo historical cabins are used as part of interpretive programs at the Tetlin NWR Visitor Center. Several years ago, a YCC crew worked with Tetlin NWR staff to rehabilitate the cabins to successfully prevent them from deteriorating. Since then, little work has been accomplished in improving the site for visitor experience. Trash and other materials continue to inhabit the area. The goal of this project would be to haul unwanted materials and trash up the hill to the road where it can be properly disposed. The trail is about 1/3 mile and moderately steep. Workers would use wheelbarrows to move materials. Moderate maintenance to the cabins may be done while volunteers are present which may include using hand tools to repair parts of the cabin. The long term goal would be to have the two historical cabins used as a supplemental experience for visitors to the existing visitor center. The cabins would eventually develop into a replica of what trapper\'s cabins throughout Tetlin NWR once served. This would enhance the historic and cultural understanding of subsistence use in Alaska and National Wildlife Refuges.
Skills NeededGood physical condition. Able to use hand tools, move materials up steep trails. See above description for additional duties.
