Project Name | Swan Lake Fire and Morel Mushroom Spring Safety Event |
Project Number | 382 |
Location | Kenai Refuge near Watson Lake |
Dates | May 23-25, 2020 |
Duration | 3 days |
Number of Volunteers Needed | 20 |
Description | Volunteers are needed to help in 2-4 hour shifts over the Memorial Day Weekend, 2020.
Morel mushroom harvest after fire has traditionally been very popular for the public in the spring and summer following wildland fire. Given the very easy access to the Swan Lake Fire burned area, the Kenai NWR anticipates a need for extra safety outreach in the late May timeframe. Friends volunteers will help staff an outreach tent at a roadside location near Watson Lake and will distribute 100 mesh bags printed with safety information to increase awareness of dangers associated with the burn area, but also as encouragement to harvest mushrooms into mesh bags to aid in
spore dispersal. |
