DescriptionThe lagoons of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge have become a popular tourist destination for wildlife viewers hoping to view and photograph polar bears. Arctic Refuge is seeking 1-2 volunteers to assist with the Polar Bear Viewing Management Program in Kaktovik, AK during the fall of 2020. Primary duties will include: Provide information to tourists about Arctic Refuge, Polar Bear ecology, safety, and respectful behavior while visiting remote Alaska communities. Develop and deliver interpretive talks. Assist in preparation of field season report. Assist in monitoring polar bear viewing activities and documenting instances of unsafe or improper conduct. Assist with other duties as assigned, including work with bear biologists and other arctic research projects. Details of employment: Volunteers will be expected to work 5 days, 40hrs/week, with a variable schedule that may include evenings and weekends. Housing and meals will be provided while in Kaktovik. Volunteers may be required to complete training courses in Fairbanks prior to arrival in Kaktovik. Information about Kaktovik: Kaktovik is a village located on the Beaufort Coast within the boundaries of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Most of the approximately 275 residents are Inupiat. There is no road access to the village. Cell phone and internet services are available.
Skills NeededDesired skills/qualifications: Excellent communication skills Demonstrated enthusiasm for meeting new people Willing to live and work in shared space with a team. Familiarity with bear deterrents including bear spray and/or firearms. Alaska Drivers License Experience operating boats in a marine environment.
