Project NameHaul Out Field Camp Staffing- Camp Pierce
Project Number159
Location
DatesFall 2010
Durationapproximately 2 wks. shifts
Number of Volunteers Needed1 or 2 (?)
DescriptionThis is an early request for volunteers for the remote Walrus Haul Out area of Camp Pierce. Staff plan to monitor the site and attempt to prevent the walrus from encroaching upon the fragile bluff areas. They will be on site in rotating shifts of approximately two weeks. The Togiak Refuge is still very much experimenting with a long term solution to this problem, but for the next couple of years, the refuge expects that the solution will include the need for staff from about late September until as late as mid November. Between the bears, weather and remote access, the Cape Pierce camp is challenging to staff at this time of year.
Skills NeededHELPERS- Under any scenario there will be experienced staff or volunteers as part of the two person team on site. Volunteer must be comfortable with living in a remote camp in bad weather for a long period (2 weeks), in good health, take a bear safety class, and possibly firearm training. A CPR/First Aid certification may be required as well.
