DescriptionPosition Description for Volunteer Work on Arctic NWR Clean-up Project The position involves working in the field with one or more persons as a team to collect and consolidate trash or debris on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The incumbent must be able to work and reside with one or more people in a remote environment for extended periods of time. The work is at times strenuous, requiring exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven or rock surfaces; bending, crouching, carrying, stooping, stretching, or similar activities. The work requires average agility and dexterity. The incumbent may be required to lift and carry large, cumbersome objects weighing up to 40 lbs. Travel to remote sites will be required via small aircraft. Travel at sites will be on foot and will require walking on uneven terrain for extended distances 3 miles or more a day. Extended periods of camping in a tent at unimproved sites is required. Applicants should be comfortable with living for extended periods in remote conditions with no support facilities such as outhouse or kitchens. A variety of temperature and weather extremes may be encountered while in the field and may include rain, snow, thunder and lightning storms, and/or high temperatures. The incumbent may be subject to large numbers of biting insects and other hazards. He/she will need to be pass the Service bear safety course and qualify as a competent shooter on a shooting range in order to carry a firearm for personal protection from wildlife. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property.
