DescriptionAssist the Friends and Fish and Wildlife Service in controlling the invasive plant orange hawk weed on remote Adak island. No prior experience necessary. The infestation was discovered in the summer of 2007 and encompasses an acre along a road in the town of Adak. The infestation has been mapped and now needs to be sprayed with a herbicide to decrease its chances of spreading further into the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. The location of the infestation is at high risk to the Refuge since it is along a road, it can easily be spread onto Refuge lands on vehicle tires. Volunteers will be trained on how to apply the herbicide in a safe manner. Volunteers will also assist the Refuge with another invasive species - rats! The volunteers will help rat proof the Refuge warehouse and will build rat trap stations that will decrease the spread of rats across the Refuge. Volunteers must be willing to work hard in rainy/windy weather. Transportation, food, lodging, and safety equipment is provided for volunteers through the Friends and the Fish and Wildlife Service.
