All Refuges Refuge: Operation ServCat

Project NameOperation ServCat
Project Number495
LocationFrom home or the Anchorage Regional Office.
DatesDecember 2025 - December 2026
DurationFlexible start & duration.
Number of Volunteers Needed1-4
DescriptionFrom home or the Anchorage Regional Office needs help selecting Refuge files for inclusion in the public-facing database: ServCat. The project is a mix of library information services and data management. This is critically important work from the field level (ensuring refuge staff have access to wildlife survey history and context) to the senior leadership level (ensuring information is available to inform management decisions). We have over 100,000 total files to review, narrowed down from an initial almost 2 million. Volunteers may select a file batch from any one of the following stations: Yukon Delta, Izembek, Selawik, Kodiak, or Kanuti. The volunteer's job will be to open files on a provided external hard drive and, for each, determine whether the file is complete, final, pertains directly to FWS work, contains information that would result in measurable "loss" if not discoverable, and contains management-related or scientific information that presents lasting value for Refuge staff, other FWS personnel, partners, or the public. The volunteer will also organize the files in folders by wildlife survey, when applicable, and track their progress in a tally-based Excel workbook. The volunteer may also access the ServCat database on their web browser to search for whether the file is already preserved. In this instance, training will be provided on how to search ServCat. The volunteer may choose to work from home or report to the Anchorage Regional Office on Tudor Road. If the volunteer lives close to a different station (e.g., Homer, Soldotna), working out of a different office could be negotiated, space-permitting. Travel to a station will most likely not be provided. However, if travel to or housing at a field station is a non-negotiable, please let me know.
Skills NeededThe volunteer must have their own working laptop or other computer to use. While we do have a few extra laptops at the office, I believe they require a PIV card. The volunteer may work full-time or part-time. No DOI training required, but some project-specific training/instructions will be provided. Volunteers need to be comfortable with computers and some basic computer tasks (accessing files on an external hard drive, copying and pasting files, familiarity with File Explorer, accessing websites on a browser); Ideally has used Microsoft Excel before (do not need to be an expert); Access to a laptop or other computer with a USB port.
