Description | We are looking for a friendly, down to earth volunteer to work full time in our
visitor center in Coldfoot, Alaska for just over 16 weeks during the summer of 2012. The
volunteer will also have opportunities to do “outdoors” outreach. For the right volunteer,
this is an amazing opportunity to work at a very fun visitor center with a small, lively staff
and to enjoy living in a remote Alaskan wilderness community. Housing, travel costs
between Fairbanks and Coldfoot, a vehicle for official purposes and fuel, over two weeks of
exciting training, and a daily living allowance are provided.
Announcement/Overview: This just over 16-week opportunity begins May 7th and runs through Sept
11th. The volunteer will work primarily in the visitor center, but will also be given opportunities for
“outdoor” outreach at the Arctic Circle Wayside and during participation in invasive weed fieldwork.
It's a wonderful opportunity to spend a summer enjoying Alaska’s rugged Arctic while living in a very
remote wilderness community and working at an exciting visitor center with a small, lively staff of
about 8-10 people. The visitor center has approximately 8000-9000 visitors each summer and is open
to the public May 25th-September 10th. The volunteer will work 40 hours a week staffing the visitor
center, will engage with the public, will sell and restock items from from the bookstore, and will create an
evening interpretive program to deliver to visitors once a week. Training on creating interpretive
programs, mentoring, and time to create a www.moreplicawatches.net program will be provided. The volunteer will be expected to work a varied schedule that will include morning, evening and split shifts. See link for more details |
Skills Needed | Skills Required: Applicants should have experience and/or enjoy communicating with public, have
current CPR and first aid/AED certifications, the ability to live and work in an extremely rugged and
remote area with a small, but fun group of people, and the ability to work in a small visitor center
office with little room and no private spaces. US citizenship, valid driver’s license, the ability and
willingness to undergo a required criminal history background check and fingerprinting are required.
