Skills Needed# Knowledge of resources (birds, caribou, etc.) # Experience in working with / teaching children (preferably Alaska Native children) # Some knowledge of Alaska rural / village life # Flexibility, sense of humor, hardiness for lousy weather, mosquites and rustic living conditions Provided by the refuge: Food, transportation, USFWS bunk house shared with men and women, complete volunteer agreement
Education TopicsBear Safety, Boat Safety, Camp Logisitics, Orienteering with a GPS/GARMIN, hike on Noir Hill, Basic First Aid/ CPR, Daily Journal writing, Fishnet sampling, Salmon Dissection/Adaptation, Local plant collection/Medicinal Values, Nature Drawing/Collages, Fire Building, visit at Malones Farm on the Takotna River, Invertebrate Sampling at Clam Lake, Kayaking and Canoeing, Birch Bark Crafting, Bird Netting and Identification, an Informal Dinner/Career night with local professional employers, employees and evening environmental science activities. New ones, I would like are Musical instruments/singing, Substance Abuse prevention and Self Esteem educator, use more teaching kits from our library resource, possibly add photography (the students can bring their own digital and we so supply disposable cameras) swimming instructor to teach swimming, bear biology, Department of Natural Resource tour, sketching outdoor activities, build tables and bences, chairs, bird houses.
